November update Braces on

Hiya!
well yesterday i got the braces on my bottom teeth! i wasnt sure if she would go ahead with it as ive felt a bit of bone where one of my teeth were removed. but she said this will just go away.
Firstly your teeth are dried and then they stick the brackets on and glued into place with a laser. It only took 20mins!! it didnt feel too bad but as the day went on it really did!! take paint killers and defo use the small silicone wax strips for your brackets. my lip is swollen and all cut. i wasnt to eat for a hour or so, or even drink! this is beacuse the hygenist put a floride glaze on after they were fixed on. for eatting i had soup and soft bread... come dinner time i had macaroni.
I was given a goody bag with a small toothbrush, toothpase and small brushes to go inbetween the wire. Also was advised to get a Fluride mouthwash.
I was abit upset to be honest at how i look. the blackets look huge on my small teeth and i cant help worry how this will look on my top set!
but its all going to be worth it im sure :)

i go back in december to get the braces tightened and again in febuary, b efore i get the tops on and see the surgeons again!
each time i go i get my pointy teeth filled a little as well.
day 2 and im still abit sore! hope its all ok by monday as im going out for my favourite tapas meal :)

Story so far...

Hi, thanks for coming to my Blog! ive decided to record my story as when i was researching it seemed to be alot of US stories. Over the next year or so i will upload my experience and pictures(possibly my medical before and after pics)! I hope this is useful to anyone in the UK seeking this treatment!

When i was younger i sucked my thumb, therefore i have an overbite of about 11mm! Yep 11mm!!! my bottom teeth are over crowded and slope inwards- therefore i can not bite a straw for example! I was offered this surgery when i was 15 after 2years of braces top and bottom, however id just had my tonsils out so didnt want to go ahead with another hospital visit!

So here i am, 27 and ive decided i want to do this!

Last November 2010 i asked my dentist about it, he forwarded me to an orthodontist in Edinburgh, who basically said i tick all the boxes for getting this on the NHS! i looked into it privately and it was coming in at £12k! its £2k for braces, so top and bottom is £4, then you have all your xrays, hospital stay, anaesthetic etc. So its taken pretty much a year to even begin!

So as you can imagine im glad its on the nhs! Time was passing and nothing was happening so i asked to be moved from Edinburgh to Larbert hospital.
I saw my orthodontist there who asked again if i want to go ahead. Then a few months later i saw 3 surgeons for a consultation and they described what will need to be done and if im happy with it.

After lots of photos, xrays and moulds we have decided to go ahead and this is whats happening to my face...

2 bottom teeth removed, the ones behind the k9s
Braces fitted this Nov 2012
Feb 2012 2 braces put on top ( not looking forward to this) i will only have these on for a year or so, as I've had braces before i have little root on the top set and my orthodontist is worried my teeth may fall out!!
I will see the surgeons in Feb and again in September to talk it all over again
then a month or so before the operation i will have 2 top teeth removed behind the k9s

The operation is due next Christmas 2012;
The roof of my mouth will be cut and brought back to close the gap of the teeth removed. My jaw will be cut on each side and brought forward. this will then be held in place by metal rods. my mouth will then be wired together for a week, and i will be in hospital for a 3day stay! i have to go to Glasgow for this operation as the roof of my mouth cant be done in Larbert. All the surgery is done in the inside of your mouth, so no scaring will be visible! Although i was told i may have two small scars near my ears if they need to drain blood out...? sounds pretty brutal as im writing this!!

Ive been told i need to put weight on. At present im 7.5 st and a height of 5"1. so McDonald's here i come!!
There is a risk that the nerves in my jaw could be damaged- this would mean no sensation from my mouth down to perhaps my neck and tong!

Last week i had the first 2 teeth removed! i was shocked at how long the roots are! i will upload a pic so you know what to expect! the injections nipped a little but that's all! make sure you stock up on soup for after and take it easy!

I'll write again when im braced up in November!
